Default Town Houses - Oz

Hi all,

Can anyone confirm what type of house is a "town house"

Is it a semi or detached?

How many floors etc.

Thanks

Colin

In Sydney, it usually refers to a modern terrace style, ie not detached (semi or otherwise).

Often found in the more built-up areas (hence the name!closer to the city). Usually has 2-3 bedrooms, on 2 or 3 levels. May also include a separate car space.

Basically, a townhouse is like an overgrown flat!

They're the sort of house where you can squash three/four of them onto a normal size house block. So multi-storey terrace-style, with usually only a courtyard or small paved outside area.

Here in Coogee, a few years ago, there were three, ordinary, neighbouring houses on longish quarter-acre blocks. Developers pulled them down and built fifteen townhouses in their place. Rather like a modern version of Coronation Street!

Colin,

Is this what you are going to get when in Melbourne? I thought that their houses were supposed to be OK??!!:scared: We were at least hoping for an 'average' Oz house, not a cramped, UK-style house. Let us know - PLEASE!!

Lou,

No, I'm planning on a larger property. It was just that I had seen them advertised and wasn't sure what spec they were. At least now I know not to bother looking at any more town houses on the real estate sites.

Cheers

Townhouses are becoming more and more popular in Melbourne. Its to try and stop the urban sprawl. It was really common last year when we went to auctions to see 'normal' houses with normal gardens go for crazy money ($700K+), because the buyer was going to tear down the current house and build 4 or more townhouses on it.

Certainly in the popular areas close to the CBD, getting a large property (by large I mean 4 bedroom bungalow with a decent size garden) is nigh on impossible now. You will always be bidding against developers,

Cheers,
JTL

Thanks for that, you had me worried there for a minute. Good Luck in your search - only a few months to go now!!
