Default Tornado hits Perth

A tornado hit at about 6am this morning. The area most badly hit is around Applecross, but apparently it travelled along Canning Highway, through the city and as far north as Quinns Rock. More than a hundred traffic lights are out and traffic is gridlocked from Warwick Road into the city, according to the radio. Trees are down all over the place, electricity is out in many suburbs and the State Emergency Services have already received more than 600 calls for help. In Ocean Reeaf, wind speeds of more than 120kph were recorded; hope all our Northern suburbs correspondents are okay.
My daughter, who lives in Melville, has lost her roof, electricity and gas services and has a tree branch through her kitchen window.

Well here in Connolly we are fine, but there was a lot of commotion at 6am this morning going on outside. Didn't realise it was THAT bad and THAT close.
Hope other people around this area are OK.

Well, aside from the horrific traffic this morning (which my oh-so-smart hubby managed to almost completely avoid due to some pretty snazzy knowledge of backstreets) we avoided any danger. This morning I was JUST about ready to go to my training (at about 5:30) when I heard the MASSIVE beat of thunder (anyone who heard it knows which one I mean.)

I decided against driving in the storm (thank goodness). Still now, I'm having to keep my office door locked or the wind bashes it open and throws things all over my office.

Hope everyone else is as lucky...

Ocean Reef at just after 6am - horizontal water, I wouldn't even call it rain. It was a wall of water blowing at 120kmh horizontally.

Journey to work in the car took 2 hours during which time I had to piss in to an empty water bottle - nice.

Things seem ok here at the north end of Marmion Ave too, it all sounded quite alarming around 6am but not being a morning person i just pulled the doona over my head and went back to sleep. A real nightmare for those who have had property damaged by it though.

Ehhh, must of slept through it

Did hear of course of problems this morning. There have been power surges down here at work, so computers broken.
Also a leak, so water off.
6 big trees down at bosses property.
etc etc.
Traffic wasn't to bad at 8.30 luckily, well, not my way.

Apparently a mini tornado also went through Bunbury 'cbd'.

Oh, and it's gonna keep raining all week.

So that's two weeks of rain now, hmmmm, it's like Brisbane!

Strong winds - no mention of a tornado.

Yeah, I think it was just very very strong winds and rain.
On the news they're only saying mini tornado in Bunbury.

I have only seen one tornado in Aus - near Eldorado, Vic about 4 years ago - it had a thin strongly rotating column and was associated with strong winds and rain mid afternoon after a warm humid day.

Tornadoes do occur in Aus but they are weak and rare by international standards.

To often people call strong wind a tornado without evidence.

Some people have said it looks as though a cyclone has gone through. That sounds more likely, though I've heard nothing official yet.

Was pretty bad here in Joondanna too, but thankfully only lasted about an hour then calmed down. Wasnt anything compared to the storm I used to experience in Cornwall where gusts get upto 100mph!
