Good to see our money wasn't wasted on Somerville. The girls may go back there when we return home. But Brisbane State High or Kelvin Grove are always cheaper options if they can get in to the ballet or arts programs. Can't see Churchie on the list though - so don't know what we'll do with the boy child. We considered Moreton Bay for all three - I better zap them an email and get their name's on the waitlist.

Can you give me some information about Somerset College? We've been accepted there and heard so much good feedback about it, but I want to be sure that its good.
Can anyone just give me some reviews of the school? thanks

In terms of high school you missed the BEST performer of the lot! This school blows the others away by a LONG way if you're looking at raw statistics.

..and the good news? Its not a $16k a year private school its a state school: Qld Academy of Science Math & Technology at Toowong (selective 'geek' school).

The following statistics relating to QASMTs 2009 Yr12 cohort were released in the latest school newsletter, along with an explanation of how QSA will not publish the QTAC rankings allocated to IBD scores and their OP equivalents. This gives a biased view of how the Academies have fared compared to other schools, and is very frustrating for the school, parents and students alike. For example, the highest ranked school, BBC, had 44.8% of students achieve OPs 1-5. QASMT had 60.66% achieve QTAC rankings of 99-93, equivalent to OP 1-5s. How many OP1 were achieved at individual schools was not published by QSA.

Overall the 2009 QASMT Yr12 cohort achieved the OP equivalents of - 30.33% received OP1s; 30.33% - OP 2-5; 30.33% - OP 6-10; 9% - OP 11-15. Overall 100% OP1-15; BBC achieved 99% OP 1-15.

I guess by national tests it means this report is only looking at Naplan results which only go to year 9 so not the best comparison for High Schools where Op scores are a better indicator. Sheldon certainly doesn't do better than Ormiston or Moreton Bay when it comes to Op results. Will get paper and see what they have based it on.

Its almost that time again. nearly 12 months later..

Having specialist State schools that have selective entry, only for the best students does not really seem right to me. But I suppose it does allow, in the same way that Grammar schools worked in the UK, those high achievers that do not have spare money for private education, to get ahead.

However, that one wasn't included as they do not take the National tests.
They do however, take the best children from those other high performing schools, which ensures that their school results will always be high.

Unlike others who do not select, their results are not from a level playing field, and are based on education gained from the students previous schools.

We are a selective entry public school for high achieving students in Years 10, 11 and 12

In January 2007, the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology (QASMT) opened with more than 200 of Queensland's most talented students.

Fair point about not being a level playing field - but I'm not sure that selecting only those students who can afford $90K of school fees per child is any more of a 'level playing field' than cherry picking based on academic abilities.

Which of these State schools, on my list above, charges $90k per child ?

Greenland State School Stanthorpe *
Indooroopilly State School *
Norman Park State School *
Brisbane State High School *

When you say $90k you do mean $90k spread over the entire school life ?

There was no cherry picking on that list. Just actual results from National Tests.

Brisbane Grammar, BGGS, Sommerville (top 3 on your list) all charge around $16k per year. over 6 years (yr7-12) thats $80k per child.

I wasnt suggesting your list was cherry picked (it lifted directly from the published results) - but these schools definately do cherry pick. they cherry pick the wealthy students. Of course wealth is not exactly a guarantee of academic success but it certainly doesnt hurt and to suggest its a level playing field is a little naive.

Indro, BSHS, Kenmore, TheGap etc etc are all great state high schools and their achievments are worth praising indeed - but it is worth pointing out that the few state selective schools (3 in qld) have outstanding results (as you'd expect from their intake) and dont get included in the regular reporting.

That's jolly considerate of you.

My son goes to Melbourne High. I'll tell him he is a high-achiever without money.

Put him in his place - far too clever for me!

Some of the top schools distort the results in their favour as well. They concentrate on training their children specifically to the Core Skills Test rather than the general curriculum to bump up all the OP's in their school. They also prevent some students sitting the test.

I don't understand the point of private schooling. If I'd paid $16K per year for my kid to go to a top school and then they only got an OP2 I'd be fuming. I'd want my money back unless they got an OP1 and it seems only 30% or so of the kids there get one.
