Tools/Shed junk-how clean should they be ?
Just started to sort out me shed & garage,and found a lot more stuff to take than I first thought.Got a few power tools,screws,bolts,tins and jars of stuff,that all add up to quite a few quids worth if I have to replace it all.
There's no mud or crud on it,but it's got plenty of dust on,so will customs go ape if they see it.I really can't be arsed to clean it all off.
Any thoughts ?

Don't they have to be steam cleaned and dust and crud free. There are certain things you can't send - like basket ware - do you have a woven hammer or chain saw. I know they are super fussy at the other end. Now that SARS is a big fear won't all the tools have to wear masks. Check with an expert cos if they see certain things on the list they go loopy (they being the Aussie customs) they are very paranoid about particles of dust or dirt.

BB, make sure you clean every thing extremely well, when we have AQUIS,[quarantine] come in to our bond store, to check your goods, if they find dirty tools or garden implements, lawn mowers, grass catchers ,etc they tend to look harder at the rest of the shipment , so do your self a favour, and clean it....MM ps make sure your vacuum cleaner bag is empty as this really pisses them off..

Cheers MM,been following your posts recently-very helpful.I must stress (been very stressed lately ) that there won't be mud on the items,just day to day dust,so I hope that a wipe over will suffice.
While you're about,Mrs BB wants to know what to do with tinned & packet food-give 'em away,or take 'em.I live on meatballs and noodles,so have a stockpile like Saddams bunker

No worries with most canned products ,since mad cow has abated they tend to be free,er with meat products, dairy, egg, products etc. They [aquis] look harder at goods if they think some one is not being up front with them, australian quarantine probably have more power then any other quarantine dept else where, if any thing needs cleaning we have to take it to their facility to be cleaned , this can get exspensive. most canned food or bottled food is ok.....lable all your food boxes so they can check the contents and you should,nt have any problems.....MM

make sure tools have no traces of sawdust. !
I spent a day cleaning all my tools, hosed them down and WD40'd everything.
So it keeps it looking clean and put power tools in individual plastic bags to keep them dirt and dust free.
Also tools such as sledge hammer, pick axe, spades etc, I cleaned all handles and painted the heads etc with hammerite. Same with tool boxes.
Makes a world of difference to how they look for very few £s.
Oh and when you have cleaned them and packed them all nice and neat into boxes. You will find you need to use the bloody things. !!!

Tell me about it.. clean this scrub that... but dont it all look nice when they are done... all our old junk looks pretty cool now!
We have even scrubbed the plant pots clean. (Jayes fluid seems to be good to clean them all up).
:lecture: btw plastic is great to store them in until you are packed, but the packers all reckon plastic is bad, and should not be used as it condenses while at sea and stuff gets wet, mouldy, smelly, rusty etc. - use paper.

Get yourself to B&Q buy a pressure wash, clean all your gear, then take it back to B&Q and tell them its not suitable. Get your spondooleys back.
