Are you saying that asylum seekers can bring their families over as well? I thought that was the whole point of the debate about boat people that the only way of leaving their country was by boat.

If their families follow them surelly this is by plane making their case a lie.

I could not disagree more. These people have been assessed by Australia as genuine asylum seekers who have had terrible things happen in their lives. To disadvantage the most disadvantaged people even more by singling them out, seems morally indefensible. These are real people not the playthings of conservative politics. Disgusting!!!

No, the opposite, they are planning to cut back the family reunion component.

If their families were having terrible things done to them as well why did they wait back home for years while the father travelled through all these safe countries on the way here. I see no reason that a genuine asylum seeker should have his extended family flown over here to live off Centrelink.

Mr Abbott said skilled migration programs would continue.

‘We will maintain, though, various employer-nominated categories because it’s important that business has the skills as a people that it needs,’’ he said
I think normal GSM is going to feel the pinch and be more focused on ENS, as for the partner and family visa's what happens in a Citizen or Permanent resident marries someone overseas... surely they would have preference over GSM.

Surely if they could have come by plane they would have. Would you choose to travel by boat if you could get a visa to come by plane? Obviously if they are assessed as genuine refugees their family could get a proper visa sometime in the future to travel by plane.

Over 90% of asylum seekers arrive in Australia by plane. The one's who arrive by plane are far more likely to be assessed as not genuine compared to those who arrive by boat. 55% of people who arrive by air are rejected compared to 2-15% who arrive by boat. So arriving by boat actually makes it far more likely that their case is the truth.

Maybe because that is the only way it could work. Why would someones wife or children be classed as extended family? Why would the grandparents of a successful asylum seeker be any less worthy than a British migrants grandparents for example. Are some people more worthy than others?

Its going to be Student and family visas so skilled migration won't be affected. Students is an issue but family visas are of no assistance to the economy.

Yeah as long as you are employer nominated skilled migration.
‘We will maintain, though, various employer-nominated categories because it’s important that business has the skills as a people that it needs,’’
Students are definitely going to cop it
Mr Abbott said he was ‘‘all in favour’’ of Australia selling education to overseas students.

‘‘But what I don’t want us to be doing is selling immigration outcomes in the guise of selling education,’’ he said.

How many ever go home again, when the conflicts that drove them to leave, end?

Some skilled migrants will leave if they can't be with their family....or not come in the first place.
