Default Time within which to move household contents?

We intend to move most of the items over with our initial move, but will be leaving some items behind to move later. I assume there is a deadline within which one needs to migrate household contents over before it is no longer seen as part of the migration/settlement.

Does anyone have information on this?

Regards,
Avron

Hi

Was just browsing a PSS brochure and found the following statement:

'Your personal and household effects which have been in your possession for 12 months prior to your departure will be admitted into the country free of duty and sales tax. You goods must arrive within 12 months of your own arrival otherwise special permission must be sought. Goods which have not been owned and used by you for 12 months prior to your departure will be subject to DUTY & GST (Australian version of VAT). If you require any more specific info the Australian customs have their own website www.customs.gov.au .

I hope this helps you with your problem,

Lynn

Not sure if I understand the question. I wasn't aware that there was any limitation on when you can bring your stuff across. Lynn's response shows that PSS say there is, but I can find no mention on the Oz customs site.

If you are a migrant coming to Australia to take up permanent residence for the first time, or a person returning to resume permanent residence, you may enter duty/tax free any unaccompanied effects - other than controlled items - which you have owned and used overseas for 12 months (or more) before your departure for Australia.

There's nothing to indicate that they would check how long you've been here, from looking at the AQIS form either.

We've some friends who had been here almost 2 years before shipping their stuff, and have had no problems with customs. If in doubt ask the shippers,
