An estate agent we look after did some good 'talking up' mid-last year, when the downturn was just starting to bite. People can sign up for a property news letter from his site, which contains houses for sale and news of houses sold - particularly when they have gone for a 'record' price. So this guy spent his weekend looking through his database for record sales for a bunch of suburbs and marks them as just sold. So then the newsletter goes out and the reciepients think "wow, this premium real estate agent is going great guns".

Neil Jenman was one of the 'advisors' on this programme:
The School of Home Truths which was shown on one of the satellite channels here in Oz over the last few weeks (Lifestyle or some such).
He always came across as savvy and knowing what he was talking about; so it's interesting to see his slant on things.

No it isn't but I don't think that it is so blatant, shallow and self-interested elsewhere in the world is it? (Somebody may correct me).

I wonder if the real culprits are the media for allowing advertisements and spruiking to be printed as 'news'.

My wife used to work for the local paper in the UK and did the advertising for the estate agents. I don't think they were any more ethical than the ones here. But the "British reserve" meant they had to be a bit more sneaky. US realtors are at least as bad as Aussie ones I believe. At the end of the day, when a salesman stands to make so much money from a single transaction they will do whatever to get your signature. No need to worry about retaining you as a customer.
