Hi there,

We will be arriving in Melbourne in a couple of weeks and will be staying for 3 weeks. We have a 5 year old daughter. Could anyone give us some must see do's when we are there?

Is the purpose of your visit a reccie or a holiday?

If a holiday, you must spend time in the cities laneways, browsing, having meals etc. The Botanical Gardens are a must, the National Gallery, shopping, go to the beach, the ones in the suburbs have golden sands and clear waters. Go to the Dandenongs and browse in the nick-nack shops or do some walking in the bush. Go down the Mornington Peninsula, visit the crashing waves of the back beaches and some wineries. Visit the Yarra Valley. Take your daughter to Melbourne zoo, Healsville Sanctuary and Werribbee safari park. Go on the restaurant tram. Go to Philip Island and see Churchill island olde-worlde farm, the koala sanctuary and the penguin parade.

If the purpose of your trip is a reccie, do everything above at weekends and during the week visit areas you may like to live in, do a real commute at 7am from those areas, visit some employment agents and take them for coffee, try and hook up with people who work in the same line as you do.

if you visit the Dandenong ranges stop in at grants picnic ground to feed the cockatoos & rosella's (buy bird seed in the supermarket beforehand to save money) & take a ride on the old steam train puffing billy.

further up the mountain is sky high in mount Dandenong, or just drop into sassafras or Olinda for a wander around the shops and grab a bite at one of the cafe's.

Already mentioned in buzzy bee's post, Healesville sanctuary, the yarra valley wineries are worth visiting. If you want to see the forests and the massive gum trees, take a drive up to Marysville. grab a pie or cake at the bakery and then check out stephensons falls.



another great place to visit is Cardinia dam to see the kangaroos at dusk. Take a picnic or BBQ meat as there are plenty of public barbies to use.

Victoria market is awesome especially the deli food section, China Town is great, cheap food and Little Italy (carlton suburb) is great if you like Italian food.

All good advice but the effing penguins at the Island and the bloody koalas at Healesville.....I always knew the Australian wildlife would come with a use-by date.
Cute for the first year - then well.

give me the roos at the Dam anyday. They are free - unless you have to pay someone to scrape them off the front of your car.

Just kidding!

Stacks to do in Melbourne - and it gets better when you live here, rather than just being a tourist.
Try a burlesque night in one of the clubs...the girls have exotic names..
try a restaurant - some of the cocktail bars in laneways.

A couple of days on the Great Ocean Road. Not exactly Melbourne but close enough and thoroughly worth it.
