Default Things to do in Cairns

Hi Folks,
We are having our first trip to Cairns in August and apart from the obvious Barrier Reef trip, what other things do you recommend for us to do?
Cheers

Hi, you haven't said how much time you have but I would go on the skyrail to Karunda and return on the scenic railway (1 day).

We also hired a camper and did a circular route round the Atherton Tablelands and back up the coast. Scenery is stunning and there is loads to see (about 1 week).

have fun!

Go up on the train and back on the skyrail otherwise you listen to the breaks sweaking all the way down on the train

Paronella Park, Green Island, Port Douglas, Undara Lava tubes via the Silver Bullet, Tablelands, Daintree, Mission Beach, Shopping shopping and more shopping - go to the night markets, Babinda and the boulders, Cairns zoo - go the night one, Hartleys Croc farm.........how much time do you have???

Enjoy it

Of course after all that activity you could just chill out like the locals.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We will only be there for a week, wish we had more time! Really looking forward to it.

Is it true that crocodiles have been found on Cairns beaches?

Cheers

Not really sure but always looking for volunteer crash test dummies!

Just remember the warning signs arent there for the tourists to be photographed with.

The crocs will be finding it a bit cold at the moment so you will find them catching a few rays of sunshine on the banks of the river at the moment and not up to much else. They do go into strange places every now and then but it is more when the temperature picks up in the summer as they tend to go wandering from one river to the next and every now and then get a bit lost or caught up in the stinger nets (we had a 2 metre one stuck in ours last year).

As WW has said just look out for the signs don't go swimming in rivers that have any signs. If you want to visit a safe watering hole go up to Crystal Cascades for a wander and a paddle - a nice walk anyway to go on as you may see the massive Lace Monitor around the benches at the entrance if you are lucky. The beaches will be safe at the moment but go to one with surf patrol as they will know what is about and what isn't

Just use your common sense and you will have no worries.

But make sure you get a window seat for the best views and photo opportunities.... I got an isle seat - might as well have shut my eyes all the way up!
