Things to do in Adelaide in a day ?
We're in Adelaide this weekend, and have a few hours free on Friday afternoon and then most of Saturday. Would greatly appreciate advice on what we (myself, Mrs Haggis and the 2 wee ones - aged 4 and 6) can do and see in this time.
Would prefer to stay within Adelaide - after driving from Melbourne we want to avoid the car for a few days !
Cheers.

In that short time, you could probably see all of it

Check out the museums on North Terrace - there is a bug man at the SA museum some weekends and they are all free, ... take the tram down to Glenelg and check out our beaches and the cafe lifestyle .... hire free bikes (have to check where that was again!) and cycle around the parklands and lake, you can also hire a paddleboat on the lake .. visit Haigh's chocolate factory and watch them make the chocolate (not done it myself, so not a personal recommendation), Adelaide Zoo .. just opened a new tiger enclosure, there is a paddleboat that goes from the city to the zoo. The Adelaide Jail is a good, but very strange place to visit, in the northern parklands. Tandanya Aboriginal Centre is great, galleries and exhibitions and in the city.
Go up in the hills and take a walk around Belair National Park (about 15 mins), see the emus and koalas, or waterfall gully (about the same) to the North east, beautiful walks .. maybe a bit steep for little ones .... Go up to mount Lofty (about 20 mins out of city) you can see the whole city from there ... if you are on a recce - check out one of the wildlife parks, The Gorge at Cudlee Creek is my favourite (about 20-30 mins) or there is Cleland wildlife park on mount lofty ..
A bit further out is Port Adelaide, you can cruise up the river and see the dolphins .. on the way from Melbourne - or as a trip (about an hour out of the CBD) is Victor Harbour, head to Middleton to see the whales and cubs that are in at the moment. ABout 30 mins out of the city going south (on way to Victor Harbour) is Mclaren Vale - wineries galore (probably not too much fun for littlies though!) to the east there are the little hill towns, Hahndorf is popular around here, it is a traditional (!) German village. Barossa to the north ..
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head ... times are just my approximations! Hope that gives you some ideas .. there is a visitors centre on Rundle Mall, with loads of info! Hope you have a good weekend.
