They want a salary
Hi,
My partner has applied for a job in Brisbane and they have sent a questionaire back. One of the questions is salary expectation. This is where we need a bit of help. Should we put down the equivelent of what he's earning now in Uk or do we try to find out what people are on for what he's doing.
I expect that this will be hard as the industry he is in is specialised and they pay usually on how good you are. In UK they aren't allowed to discuss salarys, so even if they are doing the same job they are earning all different depending on their talent.
Sorry, I know this sort of subject crops up a lot.
Thanks

As a guide, take the UK salary and multiply x 2.5...
Add $10k just to be on the safe side.

But seriously though, salaries are lower in Brisbane than UK, or compared to Melbourne, Sydney etc. On the plus side, house prices are lower too, and we are still trying to figure out if cost of living is cheaper, it probably is a wee bit cheaper here.
So, as a very rough guide, take your current salary, multiply it by 2.5 to give what you might *hope* to get in Sydney or Melbourne, and then take off 20% to give what you might realistically expect in Brisbane.
You could also check out what these sites reckon you are worth!

Don't know if it is acceptable in Oz, but in Uk I try to avoid putting a figure down - don't want to sell yourself too cheaply nor price yourself out.
Try putting 'negotiable' or 'competitve market rate' - if you have to give a figure put 'a package of $XX,XXX' thus taking into account all the benefits in addition to the dosh or 'starting salary between $XXk and $YYk'
