Default Is there an Oz equivalent to UK child benefit?

Been here a couple of months now and just wondering if there was such a thing as Oz child benefit?? Not sure if permanent residents are able to claim? If there is, how do we go about claiming it?

Yes there is and you are entitled to it if you r a permanent resident, it is means tested though. Go to your local centrelink office and they will sort it for you, give them a ring first as there are certain documents you need to take with you

Government Benefits for New Residents
The majority of new Migrants to Australia will have to wait a period totalling 104 weeks of residence before becoming eligible for most Government benefits.

However, there are a few that are available without this qualifying waiting
period, and these do relate to Families with Children.

The main benefits that are available to new arrivals consist of:
Payments to help raise children
Family Tax Benefit Part A - for parents or carers to help with the cost of raising children.
Family Tax Benefit Part B - for single income families or sole parents.

We were given our forms at the centrelink office, and told to take it back to the medicare office. Fill in the form, it has a phone number to ring to assess your income and then take everything back to the centrelink or medicare office.

The income limit varies, but a family with 3 kids can earn $160,150 pa before it stops totally.

Ok.....but it is worth considering in case you have to pay some back at the end of the year.

That is a very good point. When claiming, people must do their best to estimate the annual income as close as they can, and overestimate rather than under.

However, these days, part of the FTB is paid after the annual tax return anyway. For example we got about $3,600 during the year, and then an extra $630 after the tax return had been lodged.
When some people earn a bit too much, the overpayment gets taken out of the bonus bit.

If someone earns way more than they thought, they should get the payments adjusted as soon as they can.
