Re: Is there any truth in this?
Ah, the irony is breathtaking. You all believe The Daily Fail when its spewing forth its anti British, everywhere is better than here bile, but when it prints a negative story about oz (and I must admit i'm surprised they did) apparently it's all BS and a media beat up? ;)
Can't have it both ways  |

Re: Is there any truth in this?
A few years ago we had a gas crisis in Victoria due to the plant blowing up and the charities were giving out electric hot plates and things like that to the low income earners and it was subsidised by the gov. Anyway I heard at work that people were parking their smart cars up the road and walking down to get these things people who did not need them just because they were free.
I don't want to point fingers |

Re: Is there any truth in this?
I saw some people beign interviewed on TV...the number of hugely obese people in the queue amazed me, as did the woman being interviewed wearing her designer shades, and holding her very well dressed baby.
Sorry but I think there is a fair degree of if it is free.... I work for a huge company and if they give anything away (like pens, baseball caps etc) you would think they were giving away houses the way people fight to get hold of the freebies. And it is not because they are on the breadline! |
Re: Is there any truth in this?
I see the original story was in the Daily Mail so, while there may have been a free food handout that people attended, perhaps a little scare-mongering was i order.
That or there weren't any Princess Di stories to fill the news pages... |
Re: Is there any truth in this?
My darling husband has trained the girls to take the sugar, salt and pepper sachets in restaurants regardless of how often they get this look  from me. Doesn't make us needy, just means my husband will take anything that's 'free' ;)

I am inclined to believe that people will take anything 'free'. The real pity of course is the people who have real need having to compete with those with real greed. |
Re: Is there any truth in this?
Sorry this is partly true but the press worldwide are tripping over themselves to find hard luck stories. Its all oh chicken licken stuff.
Chances are now we all talk about money being tight it acceptable to go down the free food bank. As everyone is talking about being poor its ok to look poor and go get free food. I cant believe the priest though homeless people are ashamed to be seen in the food queue, sleeping on the street is ok but queing is not. Its a bit like the article here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7666536.stm This mum & daughter can be found up and down my road the only difference is the UK will pop them in a house and welfare. Plus this is a woman who has lost her kids because she has no place to live , yet happily watchs cartoons and eats crisps on tv. Personally I would rather spend my time , working , looking for work , re-training ,,,,get a job , get a job , get a job  |
Re: Is there any truth in this?
Coles have just opened a new supermarket in Chaddy Melbourne. They were giving out free food yesterday at the grand opening.
Perhaps the Hate mail got the wrong end of the stick! |

Australia loses 'lucky country' reputation as thousands of middle class families join free food queue
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worl...ood-queue.html It's a picture that no-one believed they would ever see in Australia, known as 'the lucky country' - thousands of people, including those from middle class families, queuing up for free food. As the global economic crisis hit hard around the world, Australians had been told by Labour Prime Minister Kevin Rudd that their country had a sound financial basis. But a queue of no less than 6,000 people, many of them from what appeared to be wealthy homes, lined up at a church in Brisbane yesterday for a hand out of food. Mortgaged up to the hilt and unable to pay because they have lost their jobs, men and women waited from 3am until late afternoon for a mouthful of food. The scenes mirrored distressing photographs from the days of the great depression in the 1930s. But this was modern-day Australia, when bank executives were picking up millions of pounds a year while their customers went on the bread line - literally. The free groceries were handed out by the Christian Tribe of Judah Church, run by a group of former bad-guy motor cyclists who have turned to God. 'This is our Free Food Friday when we usually give food out to the homeless but we've suddenly been inundated with people from the middle classes,' said pastor Terry Walker. 'It's sad that many of our homeless friends have stayed away today because they felt embarrassed about coming here for free food and being seen by the middle class people - yet curiously, the middle class didn't mind being seen here. 'They were hungry and they needed to be fed.' Among those waiting for hours was the mother of 12 children, who asked not to be named, but who said: 'If it wasn't for this church I don't know what I'd do. 'The money I get from the government just doesn't cover my bills.' Miss Naomi Richardson, standing in the queue with her young baby, said: 'I had no choice but to come here. 'Rent is going up and so is the cost of fuel and it's getting harder and harder to live each day.' By sundown, the church had given away no less than 50 tones of food - and pastor Walker expects that next week the bread line will be even longer. A sad sad sight in this day an age if this is true? Yes, I have seen similar in Perth beginning to happen. Here it is hideously more stark, with great wealth through mining / support and sheer GREED!. Then at the other end, are the normal people who simply wish to care about their families and who have been left behind. Most of (such as public service workers like myself) and who is also a student are just trying to get by and do our best. Outpriced for even a simple home, day to day things etc. Then you look in Perth city bars on any given Friday evening and there are these incongruent individuals (mostly straight ferral mean in their 20's and 30's), who just laugh at others misfortunes, are vocal about it and are homophobic, sexist and just yuccccccccchhhhhhhh!!!!!! One thing is for sure, i would rather be a happy gay boy, which I am, with a little bit of money in the bank to get by on, instead of being a hetero homophobic, racist pig!. Seems Perth is full of these backwards, don't wish to change, sexist pigs in the workplace!. Some of the women here in Perth here are really homophobic and have a massive chip on their shoulders, esp in the workplace! Now I am on a rant, I think WA workplaces are 20 years behind anywhere!. Where else would some chair sniffing oaf get away with this! Mind you, in Perth I have met some really nice people too. Moving to SYD soon. OR back to Manchester, where you may not have the weather etc, but at least people are open to new ideas and don't feel 'threatened' by new ideas from outside Perth. Perthites seem like the most insecure people I have ever met! Xx Chookas! |
