Hiya, we are a family of 4 hoping to start our visa application soon. We would ideally like to move to the Perth area if we can get work. My husband is a BMW mechanic in the UK. We are looking for anyone who has any info on jobs, wages in Australia? And if there is any local BMW specialists in Perth. Any help would be great! thanks

Hello

We arrived here in Oct 08 and my husband contacted Autoclassic BMW before we left UK to arrange an interview. He was also a BMW mechanic in UK.

He was lucky enough to get accepted for a job straight away so has been there for 3 months now, but mechanics and admin staff have been warned that redundancies are highly likely this year as it's expected to be tough for the motortrade in 2009.

The wages are not great - particularly as there is very little overtime available too. Mechanics wages there range from $22 per hour to $26 - working 38 hours a week. As someone else has said, this is the only BMW dealership in WA.

We live NOR so it takes at least an hour for my husband to get to work and the same back. This was a bit of a shock for us! In UK it was a 10 minute journey to work. Traffic is very bad here getting into Perth at peak times.

When we arrived in Oct, everyone we met said that my husband would get a job no problem as a mechanic, so we were feeling really confident about things but this wasn't the case at all. He went to loads of dealerships with his CV but nobody was taking on mechanics.

I don't know when you plan to arrive in WA, but hopefully things will have started to improve when you do. It's not as easy as we thought it would be to earn good money here but we are still happy we made the move.

If you need any help with anything, let me know!

Barbagallo in Osbourne Park sell and service prestige cars, including BMW.
Here's the info from their website. Also, I have noticed that BMW's are no way near as common as in UK, you don't see them as much. Good Luck!

Autoclassic is the only official dealership in WA. They have benefited from boom times and have grown the dealership significantly. I think about 200 people work there.

I heard BMW have bought the land to build another dealership in Joondalup, who knows whether they will proceed in the current climate though. It may be that this is delayed or that Autoclassic or someone else gets the franchise.

Who knows what the market for BMW servicing will be by the time you have completed your visa? (there are actually quite a few here - they are almost common, especially 3s and X5s). The car market has been hit massively here already and some say WA will feel the recession even harder soon. Probably best just to get on with it and try and get work when the visa's come through.

Cheers.
