Can I apply for a TFN before arriving in Australia ensuring that interest earnt on money already sent to Australia does not get large amounts deducted from it as source.

Any info appreciated.

As far as I am aware, you can only apply for TFN once you are here. I think you will be charged higher rate tax on any interest but once you submit your tax return can claim back any overpayments you have made???

You are charged at a higher rate if you do not have a TFN, and you will need a TFN for tax return. Save the trouble at tax-time and have a TFN before you get here so the overpayments aren't paid.

Some visa classes you certainly can't get a TFN online before arrival. Whether you can get them direct from the ATO with a paper form I don't know, but if you try and apply online the system doesn't accept you until you have validated the visa.
