TFN

Hi all

I really thought that when you got your golden sticker in your passport you would get a lettler telling you exactly what to do when you get to oz.

It may sound silly but i have read about getting TFN and Medicare sorted how do we go about doing this and how quickly should we do it when we get there.

Many thanks guys

Tax file number: You can do online. You need an Australian address, and can sort this out as soon as you like, before you get work is best.

Medicare: you need to wait about 10 days before you sort this out as it takes a while for the immigration dept. to send your details through. If you look at the link below you should be able to locate your nearest branch. Go in with your passports and birth certificiates (for the whole family)

We applied for medicare within days of arriving as we were told you only had 10 days to apply. Luckily though we had a rental property sorted the day after we arrived. It took about two weeks for the cards to arrive - always get the extra card.

We tried to apply online for the TFN but it would not let us as we hadn't entered australia, but saying that again it only took about 2 weeks for the numbers to arrive. We have children under 5 and we got their numbers at the same time as later in life they need to provide extra ID
