are termites in the garden a reason not to buy a house? and what about asbestos?

hi there,

we have had the building and pest survey on a house today, 30 years old, brick built hardwood frame, the boundary fences, wooden garden beds and a tree stump are full of termites in the back garden. this is our first go at the property market here so would like some advice as to whether we should cut our losses with this house now or try and deal with these problems. can you replace the wooden fences with other wooden fences that maybe protected or is it just best to go with colorbond which is more expensive, do you have to treat all the timber in the garden before moving it.

also the house is of an age that there is asbestos in it. now i know that this is a problem but would it put you off buying a house with it? we would need to refurbish the bathroom at some stage, having to get a specialist asbestos person in would be expensive wouldnt it?

please please help anxious first time buyers, we would like some wise help.

thanks
sarah

We live on a bush block and have termites in stumps etc around. They could be treated but we don't but we do get the house and barriers checked every year.

Would be surprised if there is asbestos in a 1980 house - thought it was banned late 70's

We have asbsetos for our divider fence, its solid and the council have said there is no need to remove it, we got in an expert and he agreed.

Our neighbours have also said if we want to change it, they will quite rightly go halves but we have agreed that it can stay, it withstood the Perth storms which is saying something.

I can live with an asbestos fence but personally, I would not live with any asbestos in the house and wouldnt buy a house with it inside either.

Termites, well I would talk to pest control to see what they say.
