Termites

Been attacked now twice within 6 months.
Fortunately only a few thousand dollars damage each time as we caught them early!!!
Just a word of warning, get your checks done and treatment regularly.
Wish I was in the business!

Does anyone use those traps/baits around the house? Can't help thinking that they would attract them as opposed to having none and good treatment around the house, the termites would just move on rather than congregate around the traps. Been looking at www.greenpest.com.au which look quite smart - and cheap!

God, you've got me worried, a few thousand dollars!! Just had a new front door fitted and the carpenter found termites when he took the old one off and thats only 12 weeks since we got the all clear on a termite report. They're not worth the paper they're written on when all they do is a quick visual look, ours were found under the door bar on the step.

I was being flippant re: the "only" bit! Damn it!
That someone was probably me when I had the first attack!
As much as I love this place, things like this really knock your enthusiasm.

Guess you are "lucky" like me catching them early eh!
Reports are only good for the day they are written. I have discovered that.
Maybe I am turning into a whinging pom?

It was me i'm affraid. I hate to tell you guys this but if you find them in one part of your house and think you have got rid of them you need to think again. Termites or so called white ants live either in a tree or underground somewhere within 50 meters of where you just found them in your house. What you found in the house is almost certainly just a galley or extension of the main nest, from the main nest and each galley they extend another 50 meters radius from each one you find. So killing a galley doesn't kill the nest. If you find them in your house the worst thing you can do is disturb them as they will just up sticks and hide for a bit, they can do this within a few hours and I've seen em do it, they couldn't have had time to pack properly.

When you find them you need to get an expert in to lay bait down, they are social critters and like to rub each other up so when they walk on the poison bait they carry it back to the queen and accidentally kill her and the nest.

Oh and yes the survey you pay for has more holes in it than a terrmite infested house and not worth the paper it's written on. My advice is if your house is built on a slab inspect the edge of the slab every month and look for overland mud tunnels, and if on stilts check them too often for any sign of strange looking mud. Hope that helps!

Re: Termites

Nightmare isn't! have you thought of having a 'full' barrier put around your house? our house already has one, the previous owners had a load of white ant near the house few years back in a load of rotten wood which was all over the garden.... Its drilled holes ever 1ft or so around the house, then poison is injected into it...our pest man reckons its the best way??he didn't fit them by the way ;) As our house is full of wood, we have inspections every 6 months.... also keep a close eye on it ourselves.
