does anyone know whether you can get temporary accommodation in Sydney and if so where.

Its for about a 1 month stay.

Hi, have just spent a lot of time on this as we were looking for a property for 3 weeks in Sydney, I contacted lots of people and finally settled on a place with www.rent-a-home.com If you are interested I have a spreadsheet comparing them all in terms of price, location etc. (yes I know I am a bit of a control freak...) If anyone tells me how to attach I will post here or email me and I will reply with attachment.

It depends on what you need and when you're looking, but we stayed in a great furnished 2 bed private apartment (annex) overlooking dee why beach in October, and I know the owners were talking about it being available from early feb onwards for 3 or 4 weeks. If its of potential interest, let me know by private mail and I#ll send you the details/contact info.
