Default Tell me it's not so!!!

I read this today...depressing!!!!! Is it true??

"Over 1 million people a year apply
to either work or live in Australia.

Sadly, the government only grants
just over 100,000 actual visas.

Which means 900,000 people miss out.

You need to be aware of this before
you continue any further.

You need to realise that the average
cost just in government application
fees is around the A$1800 mark
(that's around £800).

In many cases, it's much, much more."

DIMIA don't get anything like a million applications. I don't think a precise number is available, but most visas (at least the major categories) have pretty high acceptance rates, 80% or so.

Most ineligible people never apply in the first place, rather than get refused. You can't even *apply* for skilled migration unless you get a skill assessment, and the criteria are usually clear enough so others can see in advance if they've no chance of success. This cuts out a lot of potential refusals before they even get to DIMIA.

The 'one million' figure may refer to the number of enquiries. Many of these people are not eligible, and many of those that are never go beyond the first step.

Where did you read this? 1 million doesn't sound that surprising if you include all visa's (i.e. spouse, Working Holiday, skilled, business, retirement, long term temp workers). It sounds to me rather like this is a bit of confused reporting.

Looking at this, you'd have thought there was stiff competition, the reality is that every poster who meets the skilled requirements seems to post a "got it" here eventually. Meds not withstanding.

Never known a refusal.
