Telephone Interview!!!

Hubby got telephone interview this week for OZ !!

If successful is it likely he would need to go to Oz for a proper interview ?
Or can they offer a job on the back of telephone interview

Re: Telephone Interview!!!

Yes, it is, in some industries fairly common for job offers to be made based only on telephone interview. Most of the jobs i have had have only been by telephone.

Thanks for reply, can you give any advice?
Will it be questions like tell me bit about yourself?, your strengths and weaknesses etc ?

Difficult to say. I work in a specialed area and questions are usualy to do with my work and what i have done before, but as a rule of thumb he should treat it the same as a face to face. He will also probably get questions regarding a move to Oz

It'll depend on the type of job he's applying for. Be prepared for it to be a formal interview, expanding out on the info in his CV.

Make sure he knows what will happen if the phone call gets cut off for any reason (ie, will they phone him back, etc)

Try and find out from who ever has arranged the interview who will be doing it - will it be a conference call with several people, will it be a one to one, and the names of those on the other end (it can be difficult to pick up the name on the phone)

If its early morning/late night - get prepared early. Early morning, make time to have a shower, cup of tea/coffee, etc. Late night, perhaps have a nap earlier?

Have CV in front of you, or at least bullet points of the jobs he's done, preferably on one sheet of paper (don't want to be rustling paper!)

Have a notepad and pen for writing down things that come to mind during 'chat' session.

Smile while you're talking, it really does make a difference to your* tone of voice. (I know it's not you :D)

Same as with any job interview, try and research the company and try to have some questions to ask them.

Most of all - have him try to relax. And don't be surprised/disheartened if you a) don't hear back from them ever or b) don't hear back from them for weeks.

That's excellent advice Dreamy. I'd add standing up too - makes you feel more confident. However don't do what my OH does and pace about, it sounds like he's walking a marathon

And also there may be a time delay.

Re: Telephone Interview!!!

My phone interview (I was in Ireland at the time) went like this:

Interviewers: "With the time difference it's the evening here and we've got a nice glass of (my employer's lager beer) in front of us"

Me: "That's great, but if I was you, I'd have a glass of (my employer's stout) in front of me"

Interviewer (and future boss): "No, that's not right, you'd be better off with a glass of (competitor stout) surely"

(At this point I could tell I was being teased and I assumed the guy had a big smile on his face)

Me: "If that's the way this interview is going to go, you can ***** off right now"

(Big silence at end of the line. I start to sweat, thinking "what have I done?")

Huge gales of laughter from the Australian end.

Had a great interview, and other interviews later in person in Ireland and Australia, but that was the moment that I got the job. My boss is an excellent guy, as you might imagine.

However, I don't recommend this as a tactic!!

I got a job offer after a single (panel) telephone interview. I was somewhat surprised that it was so simple (and quick).

Couldn't do the interview at work obviously so had it sitting in my car in the snow... only issue was waving my hands about was somewhat difficult when trying to make a point :-)

Good luck to you both
