Question Telecoms Jobs

Hi. Does anyone have any experience of trying to find work down under as a telecoms engineer? Was finding work hard? How long did it take? Did you have to use an agency? Any info would be greatfully recieved. Thanks Vicky

Vicky, I had the same problem, searching jobsites for "telecommunication engineer " , ended up sending an e-mail to someone and they told me it was probably my job title causing the problem because australians don't tend to use the term "engineer", they prefer " technician ".

Hope this in some way helps.

Paul

There is not a lot of work for Telecoms Engineers in Oz and most of what there is, is of the boring variety. You will find a lot of competition for positions as there has been a lot of redundancies in the industry over the past 5 years or so.

The use of the term technician will normally mean a non-degree position. If you are a degree-qualified engineer and apply for technician positions you will probably be overqualified. My husband is a telecomms engineer and has always been employed as such in Australia, never as a technician.

If you are not having any luck with the term telecommunications engineer try doing the searches using your specific skill set.
