Default Techy help please

We've been using a dial-up service since we arrived and it is so slooooowwwww. The computer has a normal 56k modem but it is only ever going at 28k on this line.
Is there a setting we need to change or is this the normal speed for dial-up here? Or is the ISP?
Can anyone recommend a better dial-up? Faster, reliable, local number to dial from almost anywhere? Our whole choice of house after this depends on broadband availability.
Hoping for help

Lesley

The line may not support it. Not everywhere does. I have 6MB/1.5MB DSL here, but my phone line won't support 56K when I used to dial up.

Hi Timber,

I'm using our Acer 202TEV laptop which has a soft modem (Lucent Technologies).
It worked OK in Brissy from the hotel - we could listen to the BBC online there, so nippy enough. Maybe it is this particular phone line that doesn't support 56k. AGGHHH

The joys of telstra copper. Maybe try some of the pay as you go ISPs to see if any are better. I think your telephone line is the issue and that can't be changed.

Telstra could do a check on your line to see if it supports 56K. Here in Dubya Land, it's called a point-to-point check.

Obviously, the modem protocols need to be identical. v92 is nowhere close to being a world-wide standard yet.

Ditch the winmodem as well and get a hardware one. They're available for laptops. That'll help your cause out in the long run if dial up is what you're going to stick with.
