Teachers Wanted

Jobs here boys get them visas now ,where have I heard this all before?

YOUR editorial advised Education Minister Alan Carpenter to ask his bureaucrats why so many teachers are leaving the profession (21/9). Unfortunately, by benefiting from a system that values bureaucracy above education, these people can only be part of the problem.

Here is a better suggestion. The Minister should ask his teachers. What he would hear, especially if he asked this one, is that teachers don't feel valued as educators. It no longer seems enough for teachers to be devoted to the education of their students. Additional layers of duties must continually be added to an already-demanding workload - much of it having little to do in helping our students learn more.

The extra work usually flows from the bureaucrats mentioned above who must come up with fresh ideas to justify their own positions. The fact that our society doesn't value its educators isn't just about salaries, although that is a significant part of it.

The problem can also be seen in the career options offered to teachers. After winning a rare promotional opportunity by demonstrating skills as an educator, the only reward the system can offer is less time in the classroom and more time fulfilling administrative and managerial duties. In other words, more money involves less teaching. This surely reflects an idea that managerial duties are considered more important than educational ones. When the people in positions of power are themselves managers, how can it be anything else?

As the Minister contemplates how he is going to find the thousands of teachers required over the coming years, he should be reminded that there are hundreds of educators in schools at the moment, representing thousands of years of experience, doing largely administrative and managerial duties. When faced with the workload and lack of recognition of the modern teacher, I can't blame my colleagues for pursuing the only promotional path offered to them. It's just a shame our students, fellow teachers and the education system can't benefit from their expertise.
