Taxation of Temporary Residents in Australia - Deja Vu?
In this evening's Budget the Treasurer has announced that measures the Government had attempted to introduce a couple of years ago, and which were blocked in the Senate are to be introduced:

The Coalition Government has control of both Houses from 1 July 2005, so we can expect these changes to be passed in the next few months.
Previous articles from Go Matilda News on the same subject are here: http://www.gomatilda.com/news/article.cfm?articleid=234

I'll review and post more info on GM News in the next day or two ...
Best regards.

Hi Alan
Do you know if this would mean that a temporary resident (on a spouse visa) in Australia working for a UK based company would be exempt from income tax in Australia?
Thanks,
Anna

"Foreign source income = Income derived from sources in a foreign country or foreign countries"
Based on the above, it does look like it would be exempt in Australia, if it is paid in the UK, and subject to UK taxation.
But there may be exceptions to that exemption.
Expert advice still awaited

As ABC says, get expert advice if this is important.
