Question Tax returns for before we arrived...

...most odd, had a final notice this morning for income tax returns for 03/04 and 04/05 from the Australian Tax Office... bearing in mind we didnt arrive until October 05.....

Finally got through to them and we have to send a letter saying we dont have to submit them and why....... just found it strange and wondered if anyone else has had this problem?

In theory, when you did your 2005/06 tax return, there was a bit that asked about "is this your first tax return".

If that was filled in correctly, then they would have it recorded and shouldn't be asking you.

However, if it wasn't done correctly, they would not know when you arrived, and consequently, you would be being asked for previous returns.

But, to make it worse, they may have given you the full years tax free threshold, and may wish to reclaim some of it.

Hopefully though, they have just stuffed it up, themselves...

We got a overpayment advice recently from centerlink ( threat of debt collector, court, prosecution actually ) as they sent original advice to an old address. Anyway it was for a very small overpayment couple hundred bucks - Family Tax Benefit from 2003/04 !!! It was an error on their part, however shows they check up on you

Hope not, we paid a fortune in the first year as we had all our money in savings
