Tax Refund UK - P85....and other tricks
I'm aware that filling in a P85 tax rebate form will give you a refund on the pass tax contributions that year, but are there any other tricks that people are aware of which could potentially involve getting money back for unused services before emigrating?
I think TV licence is another one if you pay by direct debit...

Completing a P85 isn't a trick and you don't get a refund on past tax contributions; it is only to the extent that your personal allowance has not ben fully utilised that you may get a rebate

You might get a refund on any utility that you pay for as you often pay a month in advance so may have a part unused months payment returned. But you have to ask they wont just give it you back.

Apologies...I didn't explain it correctly....and in my opinion if its something I'm not aware of and could miss out on as a result then I would regard that as a trick...hence the reason for the original post.

Not really a "trick", but we've got money back from :-
TV licence
Gas
Water
Eletric
Car insurance
Home loan
But that's only because they take too much in the first place.

We still have rental properties in the UK. Rental properties are treated as a seperate business and you can't offset any rental property losses against your personal income in the UK.
So I filled in a P85 as I only was there for 5 months in the 2010 tax year, April to August, to claim my unused personal allowance back from my employment tax paid.
Taxman sends me a letter saying that because I have rental property in the UK, they won't refund me the unused personal allowance until I've completed the tax return for 2010.
So essentially they are withholding personal tax allowance rebate against my rental properties in case I make a profit on them because they know I've left the country.

What happens if you got paid £50k for March rent. They'd want their cut.
