Default Tax question for mining

Hello

I am thinking about going to work at the mines (olympic dam) and wondered if anyone on here knows about the tax implications, of doing this.

I have heard that you pay a lower rate of tax when you work at the mines, does anyone know if this is true. And if so, how much is the tax you pay. Also I heard that you have to be working there for a certain amount of time (i.e. around 6 months +, to fall into the lower tax bracket), again, is this true. If it is, how does it work. I mean, do you pay normal tax for the first 6 months (?) and then go on the lower tax bracket, and then do you get it reimbursed, or do you get the lower tax straight away, but if you leave within 6 months, you then have to pay the tax back???

Or have I been told a load of rubbish, and you don't get no tax relief whatsoever, and you pay normal tax, depending on what you earn???

Thanks

Yes, there are tax benefits if you live or work in a remote area.

Details are on the ATO website, here:

im pretty sure you just pay the applicable rate of tax throughout the year then when your accountant does your tax return they will calculate the number of days you worked in the remote area and then a deduction is applied. thats how mine has been worked out in the past.

Or do the tax return yourself.

I did mine every year I lived in Oz (well, once I turned 15). It's pretty easy to become acquainted with the tax rules/laws.....no matter how specialist they may seem. As for being audited, a mate has worked for the ATO for 15 yrs. She tells me that it makes no difference as to who submits the tax return in terms of audit. Do you have a link that says otherwise? I'd be curious to know, although I personally wouldn't be bothered about being audited at all, cos all my paperwork is always Kosher....even the receipts for my tights when I waitressed! I can understand how some people may find being audited intimidating though.

look, ive done it myself. i just find it less hassle and time consuming to get someone else to do it for me. again, its only $80 (tax deductable). if i sat at home all day i might do ot myself but id rather do an extra couple of hours at work than sit down and fill forms out. them days ended when we left the uk.
