Tax implications for non-residents
I could potentially be moving to Melbourne via my company on a 457 visa. I am a UK citizen albeit currently in the USA again through my company.
I have read that non-residents (which I understand the 457 temporary visa is) have different tax rules and seems there is no tax break on the first $18k etc so would be paying on every $1 earned. Is this correct?
I'm trying to do my research before starting relocation negotiations with my company so that I can factor in things like superannuation, whether to ask for PR application etc.
Any advice gratefully received and am browsing the forum

Re: Tax implications for non-residents
Your tax residency is not directly related to your visa status. To establish your tax residency status you should look on ATO.
It is perfectly possible for someone on a 457 to be tax resident, whilst someone else on the same visa, might not be.

Re: Tax implications for non-residents
Ok thank you, so "residency" for tax purposes is not the same as residency for immigration status. That is similar to my US position then and looking at the info on ATO seems that I would be classed as resident, which is good as non-resident taxes are not very appealing! Thanks for your help.
