Really found this site useful for our move from Oz and would like a little more help ...

I noticed on searching previous posts that people on a 457 temporary employer sponsored visas were eligible to claim for rent out of gross salary - ie no tax paid! I hope I had not been drinking when I read this!!!

My Oz employer is struggling with this idea. Can anyone :
1) Confirm if this is the case
2) What the logic is...found it tough constructing an arguement
3) Recommend a tax adviser in Sydney who could help.
4) Explain if complications if renting out property in UK...do you only get tax saving on additional costs ??

I work for the Sydney Health Authority and they operate a sceme called "Salary Packaging". Basically rent, loans,credit cards can be paid from my salary and then the remainder of my salary is taxed. Hope that helps

It's called the Living Away From Home Allowance, and its not a claimed deduction. Rather, its an agreement you need to reach with your employer to designate an element of your package as LAFHA.
