I am still technically getting an income from the UK as I have got three months notice from my job coming in. My wife starts her new job next week and so needs a TFN. As I havent found anything yet do I need a TFN now or would it simplify things to wait until I get a Job. BY doing this would we miss out on any child benefit?

If you are in Oz apply now so you have a TFN when you start. I cannot see how getting a TFN affects your UK tax position.

TFN can take upto 28 days to come through and delays your family tax credit application (although you can back date). Also banks withdraw tax on any interest you get on savings, so best to get one ASAP.

We did this on-line. Took about a week, but I think they allocate your TFN immediately, so you can start quoting it where needed.
