Tax file number

Hello all
we have our PR Visa and hope to head down to Perth or Brisbane fairly soon.
My Husband has applied for a few jobs but we are unsure about getting our Tax File number.
It seems easy enough once we are there but do we need to have it before we go? Before he gets a job offer?
Is it possible to do it when not in the country?
Can anyone please help?

Re: Tax file number

Not a problem to start job without Tax File Number, TFN, you can pick up a form from the local Tax Office as soon as you arrive. Take it away and fill it in, bring back with lots of identification (they have information sheets about acceptable idenitifcation) One of the pieces of idenitification has to be the passport with your visas in situ) that way you can prove residency and get a corresponding TFN. Once you have handed the form in it can take a few weeks to get it back but usually in time to get it to your employers. If you haven't handed in a TFN by 30 days after you have started work the employer is legally obliged to start taxing you at a higher rate. But don't worry if you get down the Tax Office soon after arrival the process is painless and pretty quick.

Just to add briefly to Sandra's comments, I did precisely as Sandra advises. The people at the ATO were surprisingly helpful and gave me a slip which basically said I had applied and could therefore work whilst awaiting the TFN. You just have to give that slip to your employer and you'll be fine.
