Tax Duty

Hello.

Can some one tell me....
Do you have to pay a tax duty on any new items such as tv, bedding, cloths, etc.

I've been told if such items are new and still in their box/packaging you have to pay some kind of levy?

Many thanks.

Yes everything has to be over 12 months old. Just take the tags and packaging off. They don't really care anyway (more interested in drugs etc funnily enough) but take it all off anyway and you'll be fine

Might find more info if you do a search too. We bought loads of stuff over and I mean loads that was all new and took the tags etc off and had no probs

But OTOH if you're buying stuff in the UK for export, you would be able to get it VAT-free, which might work out cheaper than buying in Australian even if you pay Australian duties.

We had a whole bunch of stuff that we had owned for more than 12 months but was still in its wrapping (we knew we were moving, didn't seem like much point unpacking) - customs/quarantine looked through everything but they didn't seem to care.

they dont usually care because its for your personal use - if you brought over 50 TV's in their boxes you'd get stung, but normal household gear they'll ignore.

I'd leave the TV in the original packaging personally. As has been said AQIS aren't worried about personal items and it would probably be packed better than when the shippers do it. The stuff we brought over was kept in the original boxes - only opened enough to see the items were actually in there. No one looked at them.

Yeah you can leave it in the packaging. We weren't sure if they may charge us duty and as shippers repack everything anyway we took all the original packaging off. You're call but like the guys say here you'd probably be fine
