tax allowances in australia

Does anyone know of a web site which will give me details of allowances we can claim before tax?
People have mentioned private medical health costs etc.
Anyone know about this
What else can be deducted before the government fleeces us? :(

Tax deductions.

A hugely complex area, you'll be happy to hear. There's a whole slew of possible deductions if your circumstances are right, but the qualifying conditions for most of them are very carefully defined. In the right circumstances there are deductions for superannuation contributions, car expenses, self-education expenses, work-related travel expenses other work-related expenses, special deductions for investment in the film industry, etc, but nobody is likely to be in a position to claim all of these, and most people can only claim one or two (or none). There are also some deductions for expenses which can only be availed of against certain types of income - income from investments, or rental income, say.

There are also some benefits which are paid through the tax system in the form of credits, which result in a lower tax bill - the baby bonus, the family tax benefit. Again, you may or may not qualify.

There are also what are called offsets, which are like tax credits. you can get them for having an old-age pension, for having had tax deducted at source from your salary, for having paid foreign tax on your income, etc, etc.

You'll have hours of happy browsing here: www.ato.gov.au
