Is Tasmania colder than UK?

Hi,
Im new to the forum we hope to be in Aus by August on a sponsored visa, just waiting on an interview with Hobart hospital in Jan. We were stuck deciding between Welly in NZ (have family there) and Tasmania still not 100%sure! (about 95%)

Any one in Tasmania that could advise on the weather, and nice beach suburbs around Hobart. It looks like a beautiful country and can offer everything we need, just out of interest wondered how the weather compared to the UK and Welly?

It's more like the UK than other states.

It has more extremes, hotter in summer. I should imagine that parts get colder than the mildest parts of the Uk at times.

It's very complicated because you have to consider so many variables, but broadly, Tasmania is on the same latitude as northern Spain, but also has heavy winds in winter.

I've heard it doesn't rain as much as it does in the UK....and in the winter you can see snow on the mountains!!
Tas also has the cleanest air in the world

I think all Australian cities apart from Adelaide have more rainfall than London, but of course it comes at much more restricted times of year. I have read conflicting data on this though so you'd need to check it out for yourself.

There's lots of websites with weather info on them, here:

http://www.about-australia.com/weather/tas
http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/tas
http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/bwi28/tas/climate.html

From what I can gather, its probably more similar to our weather in the UK than the rest of Oz! We visited in June, beg of their Winter and we were rather chilly, there was snow and ice on Mt Wellington but according to the locals it was a cold snap and the previous week had been glorious.

I wouldn't head to Tas if constant sunshine is your thing, we like the fact is has 4 seasons and you can enjoy each in a different way.
I'm sure some of our real Tassies will be able to give you a better picture:D

Thanks, I dont think I could stand hot weather all year round! I like the fact Tas has seasons and main land Aus is only a short flight away if i need a hot weather fix.

Its more out of curiosity as Tas is often slated as being really cold, just need to pack the winter wetsuit then!

Hi. I' used to live in Tassy for quite a few years and the temperatures in the depths of winter can get below zero, however, you very rarely see snow in your backyard, but plenty of it in the mountains.

Depends where you live in Tasmania and where you live in the UK.

....it's a lot like the UK...rains MUCH more on the West coast than the East coast of Tas. Hobart and Launceston have fairly low rainfall, about the same as London.

it really isnt as wet as people make out, we still suffer droughts in certain areas. its very strange some days it just looks like its going to pour it down but nothing comes? back in the uk you would have run and got your washing in or not even put it out.
