Taking the Tablet's in NZ.
 

Hi advise please, my partner has to take Thyroxine tablets for an underactive thyroide gland every day. Are these tablets available free on the NZ health or will she have to pay for them. They are free of charge in the Uk.

think u will have to pay for them don't think they do any free medications for adults

youve had it mate. Youll have to pay for evertyhing in nz even if your mrs gets it free in britain. Not suer what happens if you get insured here though for private?

Yes that's right you have to pay in NZ. When I was pregnant in the Uk I got all my prescriptions etc free during the pregnancy and for 1 year after....you don't get anything like that there. So I stocked up before we went! All you can do is try and get as much here before you leave so you have a slight headstart!!

Every visit to the doc will cost you $30 irrespective of the reason! You pay for everything in the land of the long white line!;)

Does anyone know anything about nursing jobs in NZ? Preferably the Christchurch area. Hoping to be there in Sept 04. Just want to say how addicted I am to this site!! I was only introduced to it 3 days ago!!

Now I think some docs must do things different, because my doc did not charge $30 for repeat visits i had to make due to a problem not clearing up ( i refuse to go into detail but before any comments are made it was not due to the quality of service). My 1st visit was $30 then $10 and $20 respectively. I will also say he charges more than $30 for longer visits i.e. a full asthma assesment.

Also on scripts, if you have a repeat you lodge it with the chemist and you don't have to pay for it (you only pay for the 1st one).

I have found you pay an initial doctors consultation of about $30, then get 3 month repeat perscriptions ongoing. You don't pay anything when you want to renew the repeat perscription, except to the pharmacy.

I use ventolin and get 2 inhalors on each perscription. So in the UK I paid around 5 quid for the initial one and each repeat, whereas in NZ I pay around $15 for 3 months worth (ie 2 * 3)...its working out a lot cheaper if you compare like for like.

Also, I've found paying $30 for your visit works really well...means you get to see the doctor straight away with no queues. Low income families get a community services card to cover most of the doctor costs and kids under six don't pay anything.

welcome to the site!! i was in Christchurch on holiday last month and got a job offer in the main public hospital there in the plastic surgery department!! they seem quite short although maybe not just as desperate as north island and don't seem to like to go through recruitment agengies etc but instead prefer the personal approach. Quite easy anyway with email etc.
