Default Taking a scooter with you to Oz.....

Hi,

We are in the process of getting quotes for shippers and they have told us that we need to apply 'Application for Approval to import a Vehicle' to take the scooter with us.

Have printed off the forms but we are stuck on Part 7 regarding a letter of compliance - we have no idea what this means and doesnt seem to say anywhere in plain english what it means

Can anyone shed some light on this..........Or advice from anyone who had to fill out this form

Cheers

Answer "no" (as you're not an australian who has bought overseas) and then go to the next question. You need to prove 12 months continuous overseas ownership and provide copies of the your passport, visa (or visa grant) DVLA documents and some kind of proof of purchase. Send all this off to DOTARS before you pack the bike. They will send you approvals in triplicate

Dotars is the easy part. You then have to pay to get it customs and quarantine cleared at this end. You pay a percentage of the vehicle value, based on purchase price (or get a valuer to say how much it is worth). Then you can take it home (but not use it just yet) Then (in WA at least) you need to make two early morning trips to the pits. First to get the bike failed as they stamp your DOTARS form. Then you send off this form to a place to get your compliance plates. Then you go over the pits again (costs about 50 bucks each time plus $15 24-hr temporary travel permit) Finally you get the licence plate ($220 for plate+road fund license).

You really have to love the scoot to make it worth the effort.

And then someone in a 4X4 will try and run you down
