Taking Pets to Brisbane
 

Hi

We are hoping to move out to Brisbane in February/March once the sale of our house is sorted.
I just can't bring myself to leave our dog with anyone so have made the decision to take him with us. Can anyone give us any advise on taken him out and what the quantrine process is like!!

I have only recently started to look into this myself but I understand that since the UK have changed the quarantine laws as from today this affect taking dogs into Aus, I think that you have to have the rabies injection then 30 days later have the blood test, if the levels are ok from the date of the blood test the days counting start the longer you can leave the dog in the UK then the less tome he will have to stay in quarantine in Aus, if you stay the max time in the UK 5 months then your dog will have to spend the min time in quarantine in Aus which is 30 days but if you have to travel sooner then your dog will have to spend longer in Aus in quarantine. I think there is a post on this forum that should help, also check out this this website it might help www.daff.gov.au I think the cost is approx 3500 sterling, Hopefully someone can help you with their experience.

Hi. I took my Jack Russell Terrier aged 14 to Brisbane. I did all paperwork myself and saved a fortune. My vet was amazing and helped me through the whole process. You have to get a federal vet or a government vet to do it. She was in quarantine in Sydney for 3 weeks and was fine. They put her on a plane to Brisbane and I picked her up at the airport. If you delay the blood tests etc until just before you go then your dog will have to spend longer in quarantine, so check the timing of everything. I did find that there are a lot of places in Australia where dogs are not allowed. They don't have the freedom that UK and Canada has. That was my biggest dissapointment.

Most animals come out of quarantine just fine, but it isn't a nice experience and I would do anything to avoid my pets being in there for a prolonged period.

The nearest quarantine place to Brisbane is Sydney so you need to get your pet shipped from UK to Sydney then Sydney to Brisbane. The great news is that quarantine is only one month in Aus which is nothing..

It's mot unusual for people to have their pets transported internally in Aus and we use Dogtainers who were great. They organise the move from Sydney to Brisbane and your pet will be picked up in an airconditioned van.

It's a fairly straightforward and easy process and doesn't seem to create much upset overall.

It used to be the case that it was only one month; but per the new requirements introduced yesterday it could be up to six months if the correct procedure is not followed regarding rabies injections and tests etc.

what if people do follow the correct procedure how long will it be then? (cos we presume most people will do the right thing)

It took me at least six months from start to finish for my dog to only be in quarantine for a month. Speak to your vet and they will be able to confirm it for you how much time you need.

Thanks everyone, just getting some quotes and then going to see the vets in the week!!
Hopefully it want be too expensive!!!

For clarification is it the injections, check ups etc that can take up to six months to implement as opposed to the actual quarantine time? Or is quarantine more than a month in Aus now?

For us we are having the rabies test done on Thurs, then 30 days later the blood test, I understand the clock starts on the day of the blood test if the results are ok, our dog has to stay in UK for further 5 months after blood test to be able to have min 30 days in quarantine.
