We move to Oz in the new year and our daughter wants a laptop for Christmas,
would a laptop bought in the UK work OK in Oz as she doesn't want to wait till we get over there.

and when you get here, you'll find that Aus electrical plugs are different from uk ones.

You will notice that the laptop charger cord actually comes in two parts. Just disconnect the section with the uk plug on it, from the power brick. Go to an electrical place like Jaycar, and buy an Aus version for $6 or $7... then plug it into the power brick and you're ready to go.

When you move it would be smart to pack a extension board for 5-6 uk plugs for your small electrical items, such as phone chargers, laptops, etc. then you need only one conversion plug for the whole strip instead of 5-6 conversion plugs or replacement cords.

There are slight differences on the keyboard used here, we have $ not £. If she has any problems here's a useful page:

This is a list of ALT codes for generating foreign characters. These can be done on a laptop keyboard but are much easier on larger laptops if they have a numeric keypad.

And the quotation marks " and the @ symbol have swapped - that is a major pain with work and home computers and bloody email addresses. One day I'll get it right.

I got a int warranty with my Dell laptop bought 2 months before we left. Warranty has been perfect in Aus with no quibbles whenever they had to come and fix a problem, so that was the right move...
