Post Taking the dog -2 grand or 8 pence?

Looks like we'll be off to Perth late November, but may be held up coz of our canine-'Buttsniffer'
We have said all along that we'll be taking him,but now the cons are catching up on the pros.

PROS:-we're told that the more familiar things you take, the less likely you are to get homesick
-By having a dog to walk, you'll be obliged to take him out & discover the great beaches & parks etc etc
-As with kids, dogs bring you to socialise with other parents/dogowners,so new friends are often met
-Baldbutts jnr has grown up with him (same kennel) & being an only child,he gets everything he wants anyway,it'd be quite upsetting for the little bleeder
-Buttsniffer is no trouble,he sleeps outdoors all year round,is very fit & laid back(they say dogs are like their owners)so the plane & quarantine won't bother him

CONS:-It's gonna be difficult enough to find babysitters, what happens when you want a holiday?
-With the preparation(injections, vet check ups etc),it may take a couple of months to get him out there,& we don't want to travel over Christmas
-It's gonna cost nearly 2 grand in total,or do I spend 8 pence on a 12 bore cartridge?
-Now he's castrated,I can't find anywhere to kick him

Oh,& before all you tree huggers start moaning about me shooting him,I wouldn't dream of doing it (I'd put him in a sack & throw him in a river). And I don't really kick him,I've kept his balls in a jar,& when he plays up,I squeeze 'em & watch him hold his groin with his paws!:scared:

Oops went of a bit then- Any advice from people going or already there will be appreciated,& please,no stupid replies,I hate people who think they're funny & don't take this forum seriously, you'd never catch me doing it.

Cheers BB (now where's that jar?)

Hi, just to let you know that I emigrated to Adelaide May 2002.
I have a Boxer aged 9 years, who I have had since 9 weeks old and two cats aged 2 and 13 years.
The problem I had was that I spent so long considering what to do, that by the time I had booked my animals in for injections, flights and quarantine space, it turned out that they couldn't fly until 9 days after I had left England. This lenghthened the're stay away from me.
In total the quarantine is 30 nights, which turned into forty by the time they flew. It absolutely broke my heart being away from them and I remember counting the days.
Anyway, they all arrived safely, (although a little bit thinner) and I don't regret one moment of it.
The only thing I would say to anyone transporting pets is don't just take into account what it costs you to fly your pets,
the quarantine then send you another bill for kenneling, food etc., which if you haven't allowed for it , can come to a tidy sum. ( The company that you fly your pets with should be able to give you an idea on cost. If not you can phone the quarantine direct, who can give you a price.)
All I can say is go for it, I wouldn't be without my pets for the world. It took them a while to settle down, but now you would never know that they had ever lived anywhere else.

I would go with taking Buttsniffer (won't Baldbutts jr rattle around in the kennel on his own?? ). I personally think that the familiar objects thing is a true. We don't have a dog but my 12 year old has a treasured teddy bear, and I know we wouldn't consider leaving home without it! Anyway £2,000 of course is "only money"
Or could you leave Buttsniffer with anyone in the UK and have him jetted in at a later date if you miss him? Don't know what you'd do if you didn't, though!
Just one point of view, hope it helps

PS keep up the good work with the messages, they cheer me up no end!

sorry mate 8 pence sounds good to me.
2 grand is well on the way to improving your car or somthing.
how about a nice plasma television. or a week visiting us and yvonne in melbourne.
or some new quality wax.
im sure as a compromise you could start looking for a nice new home for him over here.
but dont do it. if your desprate for a dog get a new one over there. just remember the old saying.

Take you dog with you to Perth, take advantage of the new pet passport.
In answer to your question, yes you will enjoy your walks with him, it will get you out and about, most beaches won't allow dogs but you are bound to find one near you that does, there are parks everywhere and 'poo bags' are free and hang off the bins around the parks etc.
I think that if you don't take him with you that your family may never forgive you, it'll be hard on your family saying goodbye to family/friends, don't make them say goodbye to there pet.

We will be returning to the UK soon and our pet will be coming with us, from this end with everything including his flight it has cost us approx $3,000 and worth every cent.

What ever you decide to do, I wish you luck.

We left ours with good friends who lived in the same neighbourhood. He was a healthy dog but super sensitive to things. Even the vet said it might be difficult for him to travel and put up with quarantine, so we left him. That was the main reason for leaving him, as well as the worry about finding a rental that takes a dog, and having more than enough to put up with when we got here without worrying about the dog, quarantine, etc.

I probably cried at least 10 times during the first year. You'll miss him if you leave him, even if he's with good people. That's the only downside. That, and the fact the kids will then nag you for another dog when you get here so you'll likely not be without a dog here for long. Like us. Got another goofy, needy, drooling, food-obsessed, hairbag Golden Retriever the year after we arrived. I keep threatening the kids I'll give him away if they don't walk him and brush him and vacuum up the hair more often, but I probably couldn't bring myself to do it. The buggers tend to get under your skin somehow.

When you go on holidays, you can always board him at a kennel, until you get to know people and find someone who'll babysit. Ask the vet for a recommendation, or other dog owners you meet at the park or beach or in the neighbourhood. We had two people at my husband's workplace offer to take our dog when we go overseas later this month but my dad from Geelong is coming out. You'll find people eventually. In Perth here, so many people have dogs. We are completely surrounded by dog owners where we live.

As far as PB's comments about Perth not being dog friendly, I like the fact that you can only bring your dog to certain beaches. It wouldn't be workable to have dogs on all beaches. Not everyone likes dogs or wants other people's dogs around them when they're at the beach. You'd have little kids scared by them, or knocked over, people allergic to them freaking out, dogs peeing or crapping everywhere and the owner not noticing or caring, people stepping in dog poop (in bare feet!!), dogs running over people's towels. It'd be chaos. It's far more sensible the way it is, especially considering the high proportion of dog ownership.

Unfortunately, not everyone picks up after their dogs. It's a matter of them being caught, and cops have better things to do than harass dog owners. It'll take time to educate people. And dogs on leads is a sensible law too. You can't trust all dogs or their owners.

Good luck. Hard decision, I know. Do what you feel is right or best for your situation.

Hi Christian,

Could you please supply some info about taking a pet back to the UK.

Which company are you using, time scale, injections needed etc?

taking two cats back from Melbourne to UK mid next year. You need to go to a Quarantine Vet, and get your pet jabbed for Rabies. A month later, a Titration Test (on the blood) to see if there are rabies antibodies forming. 6 months AFTER THAT TITRATION TEST, your pet is allowed to travel to the UK WITHOUT ANY QUARANTINE AT ALL.

i have been quoted $2600 to get two cats from melbourne via qantas (only mob that fly animals internationally) to London Heathrow (includes wash and de-flea, all paperwork etc etc). Rabies jab is about $80 per shot.

If you keep up the annual boosters, your pet can travel at anytime to the UK.

Getting ours done now in case perm residency doesnt come through (on a 457 visa at the mo) next february.

hope that helps.
