I have done this previously with a Ford Falcon.

You need to have owned the car for at least 6 months before shipping it otherwise you will be charged inmport duty.

You need to have a series of tests done on the car to ensure its compliance in the UK. The main one is that the speedo has to show the speed in miler per hour. this has to be also visible at night.

On arrival in the UK you need to go through compliance and then register the vehicle as an import. You are unable to sell on the car within the first 12 months of having the car in UK otherwise you have to pay import duty and VAT.

There are a few forms to fill out and it can be quite time consuming.

Good luck

Absolute waste of money unless it has sentimental value and its worth alot of money. If you were going to ship a car like a 6 litre V8 HSV Holden, a car that is not available in the UK then it may be worth your while, I doubt that you would want to pay the fuel bill in the Uk for a car like this.

Not necessarily so - we are looking at shipping our NZ truck back to the UK and the sums stack up reasonably well.

Go figure - you can ship back to the UK and be on the road for about AUD4000 all in. Now, how much will you 'lose' by selling your car in Aus? How much mark-up will you pay to buy a motor in UK? Can you a buy a similar quality car for similar amount in UK? Do you know the service history of your Aus car and will you buy new in UK or possibly a secondhand lemon? Can you fill the car with possessions in the container?

For me, I reckon we'd be quids in unless I can get a very good private sale price in NZ. If I have to sell to a NZ dealer or to auction, I'd be miles better off shipping.

Couple of sites I have noted:
