we were just wondering when we go to perth for our reccie which is the best way to take our money

we are taking some oz$$$$

but will we be better off taking travellers cheques or can we just go into a bank and draw $$$ over the counter using our visa card.

also what money should we have for use in dubai airport steriling aus $ or do we need any other currency just to buy drinks and stuff

we went last year and took ozzie dollars and T/c plenty of banks around to cash them...also Dubia takes any type of cash...we paid for drinks in$$ but the change was in dubai

If you have a Barclays Bank account in the UK then they have an arrangement with Westpac in Autralia, so you can use your debit card in their cash machines without paying any fees. This saves a considerable amount of money. I am sure other UK banks have deals like this with Australian banks.

You can always open a nationwide building society cheque account. This gives you a debit card that allows you to pay for goods and withdraw funds from any bank's ATM in Australia without having to pay currency exchange fees or withdrawal fees.

We have still got our nationwide account and used it to transfer the proceeds of our UK house sale. Much easier and safer than dealing with T/Cs.

if we did have travellers cheques does anyone recommend we have them in aus $ or gbp as i dont know what the exchange rate is in perth it is about 2.33 over here

I have a service account ie i pay a fee each month and one of the pluses of this is that i just get off a plane where ever i go and find an ATM no charge its so easy its untrue

Be aware that for $AUD T/Cs Aussie banks still charge a commission for converting them into hard cash. The vast majority of shops and businesses will not treat them as cash (unlike the US). So you will have to pay the commission in the UK to transfer your GBP to AUD and then again to cash the cheques.

Hey mate,
Are you sure about that Aussie bank charge a commission for converting TC into cash? Just courious to know more.

When I was in US, I tried encashing my TCs but in USD's I went to many banka and they never charged a penny for that...Not sure how it works in Oz...???
But logically speaking they should not charge a single penny for that...since money is already paid for the TCs (like Bank drafts).

Got confuse after your feedback, please tell me more on this..

Aussie banks charge you if you breathe on their premises, so I bet they charge you for cashing travellers cheques.
We got a cheque drawn against our account today, made out to the Rental Agents for our house - cost $6 because we wanted it as a cheque rather than cash......

Was in Oz last May and used Visa Debit Card with no problems, even used it for car hire etc.
Even small towns have ATMs and it's easier than travellers check...
