Re: Take stock, because most return home.
Paki
(UK & Commonwealth) a Pakistani or other South Asian (regarded as offensive when spoken by non-Pakistanis or non-Indians, though not normally regarded as offensive in Australia and Canada)
From wikipedia.
From Oxford English
Definition Paki, noun [C] OFFENSIVE
a person from Pakistan
Since the aussie macquarie dictionary is not online searchable (luddites) I couldnt get a definitive aussie definition. However it does say above that its 'not offensive' in australia or Canada. So the Aussies on here (Vash etc) are probably correct in saying its not offensive in Aus but the UK mob are also right that its highly offensive in UK. Interestingly the www.paki.com website is North American so outside of UK.
Seriously, in UK this word has a long heritage of being used by racists and far-right as well as the bumbling masses. It used to be acceptable possibly in the 50's in the same way it was acceptable to call black people wog's (which is still acceptable in Aus as far as I can tell but in the broader sense of a wog is any foreigner ) but in UK now in the year 2005 calling a black person a wog would end up with a less than positive response and would be offensive. Alf Garnet has a lot to answer for. The difference I guess is wog is a shortening of golliwog which is not a state - so not a direct correlation but used to illustrate.
For the aussies in England - Dont call people Paki's they wont like it in a very very big way. Same way as we English coming to Aus now know there is a different meaning to the word root.
Ah the UK is such a special place.

Are you a Paki?
Are you a Paki?
This is the country that calls people "Wog's" and thinks it's ok.

I really don't like the way this thread is headed and am therefore closing it.
