Hundreds of opinions available on this if you do a search, but in my opinion you need to audit your house looking at what you have, how much you could sell it for and how much it would cost to replace.

To summarise if you have a lot of stuff which is getting old or which you would shortly consider replacing then it maybe better for you to sell most stuff, ship a few boxes over of personal items, clothes, etc and buy new stuff out there

However if you have a load of expensive stuff or lots and lots of stuff then you are probably better shipping.

One rule seems to be that if you do get a container then just cram into it everything you can - you have paid for it. so you might as well take it.

TVs wont fully work (ie receive programmes through an ariel) but they will be fine with DVDs, VCRs, Playstations, Foxtel, etc etc

We carried out the above exercise and decided to ship a few boxes of personal stuff, sell most major stuff (house buyers bought most of our furniture) and start again new when we get there.

One thing you need to know is that most rental properties come un furnished- they all have gas or electric ovens, shower bath etc , bu that 's usually it.
My belief is that the cost of shipping is greater than the cost or fun of buying new out in Oz.- if you know where to buy .
If you choose to bring everything you could be sat in an empty apartment/house for 5-7 weeks as you won't want to buy anything here.
That is quite demoralising.
Australia runs on 240 volts and i have heard of a booming trade here is fixing blown up uk electrical equipment.

Why - Australian and UK voltage is compatible and most applicances from the UK will happily run when plugged into an Australian socket.

I'd say 95% of my electrical equipment has come from the UK and I've never had anything blow up.

Same with mine. It's the same voltage. Even the stuff I bought in Australia and shipped back to the UK, and then back again still works fine.

Also, some TV's work perfectly normally, but agreed, "some" don't, or they need adapting.

No problems with the voltage, although televisions don't always work for other reasons. The answers to your question therefore must revolve around the costs of transporting the goods, and the consequences of any delay in their arriving (on the one hand) and/or how you would store them if you don't need them straight away, for example because you start off by renting a house with a refrigerator or whatever in it (on the other hand).

Re: To take or not to take

Well I am taking everything. We are sending out things in April although we don't leave until June 20. So by the time we get there our container will already by there ;) . My sister is leaving to go to oz in April so we are sharing a full container, so only paying for half. Worked out quite well. I remember being in oz before and went to Wall Mart and bought things like clothes/drier, washing basket etc, and before I knew it I had spent almost $150, just like that. Now I know I want my savings to last and don't want to spend it on things that I already have here.
