Try Neutral Bay / Cremorne. 3 bed townhouse $675. 10 mins to beach, 10 mins to city.

Re: Sydney suburbs - best of the best
So you aren't playing with millions and it might take you a while to find our feet in the Sydney property market, but it is definitly do-able on your budget. You might have to have a fairly basic sort of 3 bedroom house that is 20 mins from the beach but as you get more settled in Sydney you can probably climb the property ladder a bit more easily to get in the exact house that you want to be in.
How about Randwick area? it is really close to the city, has great public transport, only like 5 mins to the beach, sits alongside some of the most affluent suburbs in Sydney (and on the otherside some 'less affluent' suburbs). None the less it is relatively safe and very family friendly. Got very much a white-middle-class-family kind of vibe. I used to be a nanny in that area and every time we went to the park there were kids and parents all over the place.
For example you could get something like this (though this one has already gone) http://www.realestate.com.au/propert...wick-404751354
If you think you could be a bit leanient on the commute time the Northern beaches are amazing and it is like you have stepped into the quintessential Australian beachside neighbourhood. Up around Avalon, Mona Vale, Newport etc. If it was me the lifestyle and sense of community you get from this area far outweighs the extra 20 mins in commute each way but that does depend on whether you can cope with that aspect and public transport is pretty much non existent. Beaches are generally in walking distance too.
Here are a few just to give you an idea:

Good Luck and feel free to ask if you need any more information.
