Sydney rocked by race riots

Sydney has been rocked by race riots with protesters fighting running battles with hundreds of police officers.
Bottles and petrol bombs were thrown during the trouble which followed the death of 17-year-old Aborigine Thomas Hickey.
The teenager's mother claimed her son died after falling from his bicycle and being impaled on a fence while being chased by police although officers denied they were after him.
Community leaders said tensions were already simmering between police and the impoverished Aborigines living in the ghetto-like Redfern neighbourhood of downtown Sydney before the violence flared.
Assistant police commissioner Bob Waites said eight officers were taken to hospital after police were pelted with bricks, petrol bombs and bottles during the nine-hour riot.
The injured police officers mostly suffered broken bones while one was knocked out after being hit by a flying brick.
Four alleged rioters were arrested but not immediately charged.
Mr Waites said police had identified other rioters and expect to make more arrests in coming days.
At the height of the fighting, about 100 rioters set fire to Redfern railway station, torched a car and smashed windows.
Aboriginal community leader Lyle Munro said anger in the community had been simmering long before Thomas's death.
He accused police of harassment of people living in a squalid grid of near-derelict houses known as The Block.
