Default Sydney the migrant magnet

From today's SMH

Sydney has six of Australia's 10 lowest unemployment areas, underscoring the city's status as a job-creation powerhouse - and its enduring attraction for migrants.

The northern beaches had the country's lowest official jobless rate in December at just 1.4 per cent, labour force data from the Bureau of Statistics show.

The unemployment rates in northern Sydney, central Sydney, St George-Sutherland and central-western Sydney - which includes Parramatta - were all at or below 3.5 per cent last month.

Yet little more than an hour's drive from Sydney was the highest jobless rate in the country - Wollongong, which registered unemployment of 9.6 per cent.

Craig James, senior analyst at Commsec, said the figures demonstrated that Sydney dominated the national job market, while drawing attention to the sharp regional disparities.

"Very low unemployment is the domain of much of Sydney," Mr James said. "There is a smattering of areas with very low unemployment elsewhere in the country, but it is predominantly a Sydney phenomenon."

The national jobless rate stood at 5.6 per cent - seasonally adjusted - in December, the equal-lowest rate for 22 years.

Wollongong, Adelaide and Tassie seemed to be the worst spots.

I missed this post in Jan as I was on my hols. I live in the Northern beaches and love it. It has the best beaches, good weather a cosmopolitan lifestyle, very low crime rate and lots of work for everyone. I encourage everyone coming out for a holiday to check it out.
