Default Surgery waiting times

Hi all,
We have a bit of a dilemma, my husbands back problem has got worse over. the last couple of months and has just had an MRI last week having waited for ages to get one. (our move to oz is on hold because of this) we are now waiting to see what the result is .
It may need surgery but do we wait here or just come out and if if need get it done in oz.

We have both given up jobs in the last 3 months ( problem not that bad at that time has got worse) and have no income eating into saving which will help us to set up in oz.

We would have arrived mid jan, I have got interviews and could have job lined up for feb ( i am a nurse) . we hoped to get our son settled in year 11 in jan as well. Hubby was to sit his salespersons certificate then job hunt.

If it becomes an emergency would he have to wait long to get treatment.
If we wait here it might be 18 weeks until surgery and then months getting better.

I am waking up feeling we are going nowhere. We need to make a decision soon.

any thoughts

sorry to hear what has happened.

back pain is something you need to be really careful about (as you know).

personally i would wait to have the surgery. i know it will be fustrating for you all, but to wait till you are over there is asking for trouble. it's a hell of a long flight and with back pain sitting for long periods is agony, the last thing he needs to be doing is messing about with luggage and all the rest of it and you dont need the extra stress if his back goes again just as you have landed.

i think the best thing you can do is wait.

Thanks it is actually an nerve decompression he might need .
He only has numbness and pain when walking sitting is no problem.
He goes to the gym everyday and keeps fit lifting again is not a problem.

Also bear in mind that if you have applied for a visa, whether it's been granted or not, you are obliged to let DIAC know about a change in your husband's medical condition and that he requires surgery. I'm fairly certain that the taxpayers of Australia would prefer he had the surgery done before he gets here.

Have you tried other options rather than the surgery route.

My son, at the time 10 was advised he would need op after a football injury I sought a second opinion as it seemed extreme to say the least. We were referred to a specialist who has it happened was interested in sports injury who said for me to take him to someone who specialises in sport injuries to have it corrected non surgically. Here we are 4 years later and not a pick of bother.

Many docs seem eager to operate, we were also advised not to see physio and consultant would not refer us to one he said they only deal with particular area of injury and not the muscles supporting it.

My own painful back problems resulting from giving birth was also sorted non surgically by a chirpractor.

I'm not saying that surgery may not be inevitable but other options may work better and in a lot less time.

Is the gym not making his problem worse it did for me, left me in agony never will i do an ab crunch again

Depends where you are going, if its QLD you could wait that long to see a specialist for your first consultation (unless you want to pay for private). The wait for the surgery could well be much longer than 18 weeks, for many things if you want it free on medicare its months or years.

Also be aware you will probably pay for all your diagnostic imaging, prescriptions etc here.

He doesnt want surgery and we dont know if he will need surgery, he has had this back problem for 20 yrs, Painful every day but he is still a fit and healthy guy he has never had a day off work with this or any other illness in 30 years.
Hoping to see consultant new week and yes we will probably get it done here anyway as his consultant is best spinal surgeon in scotland. we dont intend to take up any taxpayers money.
He may stay here and i will come out with my son.

We will have to wait and see.

Hi,
He has been to chiropractor and also being getting tamars treatment from the sports physio which has helped . Went private to see what long term prognosis would be, he is a positive guy and never lets it get in the way of his work/fitness. the surgeon and physio both say he is better to do his gym as it keeps him healthy. (cant do squats) and always wears a belt. Hopefully he wont need surgery and if he does for a long time to come.

Hi Sharon

Sorry to hear about Ricky's back. Seems to be one obstacle after another for you guys at the mo. How's lovely Forfar? Still dreich, cold, wet and windy?

We have some of my rellies over from Brechin at the mo so are heading down the Gold Coast tomorrow for a night in a hotel. Really looking forward to it. Weather is lovely in Brissie at the mo. Hasn't been too hot yet but I guess it is still only spring.

Say hi to Ricky for us.
