There are plenty of surfers at our local beach all year round ( Ocean Beach and Waimarama, Hawkes Bay). It's not the best surf in NZ I'm sure, but it certainly attracts enough enthusiasts. I would compare it to Woolacombe in Devon. In the summer months there are more belly boarders than you can shake a stick at! There's a beach patrol there and they keep an eye on the belly boaders, but let the surfers alone.
I would certainly do your homework before you come as I have heard of some dangerous beaches where it's too strong to surf. Enjoy your hols

Thanks for reply, I'll be migrating across next summer (its not a holiday!), hopefully - if all goes to plan!. Looking at North Island. whats the average water temp during summer mnths?. Can I use a shorty or is a full suite better?.
I've actually just been surfing at croyde near woolacombe, surf wasn't to good as it was too messy when I went.

If you are going to be anywhere near Auckland Piha beach is a fantastic place for surfers. I used to live not far from there. Its a very beautiful place too.

anyone know of shark attacks around NZ shores?. You hear a lot around oz but not much about NZ. I would imagine your going to find them near seal colonies if anywhere?.
