Surfers ...

It's the Epi-centre of the GoldCoast. There are many hotels and a Casino (nearby) and Shopping Malls at Southport (Australia Fair) and Broadbeach (Pacific Fair). There is Seaworld, Warner Bros Movie World and Dreamworld all close by. It's one of Australia's playgrounds. It's synomous with towerblocks (Hotels and Residentail) along the beachside.

Brisbane is an hour or so to the North ...

It's always possible to find a job .. though May is low season (getting on for Winter) ...

the local paper http://www.gcbulletin.com.au/ and local radio station http://goldcoast.seafm.com.au/ my help you get a 'feel' for the place

Plenty of jobs but they are maninly limited to Catering, hospitality lines, bar work etc. Its just a big tourist area.

We spent 4 weeks there last year,so not the most accurate reply.
Anyway,we stayed in Broadbeach and got burgled the first night! Could've happened anywhere I know. But we were told by the filth & locals that drugs are rife, and they had 'Spidermen' burglars who scaled the high rises.
Found Surfers to be Ozzes Blackpool, with shadows on the beach by 3 o'clock thanks to the Japanese owned sky scrapers. And couldn't even find the golden meter maids to show 'em some of the Baldbutt charm.

Give me Perth anytime.

to compare Surfers' to Blackpool is ridiculous - Surfers' has decent beaches and a "holiday" atmosphere. Blackpool has what? It is a dirty sleazy dump although there is one redeeming feature - Chubby Brown plays there. Also completely crime free - ha ha ha.

hey, almost forgot - one of the most important things - Surfers' has got some brilliant restraunts - you really can taste food from all over the world!
Admittedly the same can be said for Blackpool - as well as wonderful English cuisine - yum ! - there are all sorts of international delicacies:

Curry (over chips of course!)
Pizza ( with chips and mushy peas)
Tortellina alla panna ( well scouse on chips really )
French Fried Potatoes (with chips)
Mexican refried beans ( mushy peas [with chips])
Pommes noisettes ( with chips )
Genuine American Hot dogs ( sausage butty with chips )

and the prices are so reasonable in Blackpool as well $A48.00 for fish and chips for 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhhh. But can you have yer piccy taken where Alan Bradley from Coronation street was run over by a tram ? No contest I believe.

Aaand-has Surfers got a Ripleys world of freaks and stuff?

baldbutts Nov 25th 2002 4:27 pm

Oh yeah,Surfers does have a Ripleys.
I knew that!

Balbutts - we were heading for Broadbeach:scared: Give me more info.

I agree with BB that Broadbeach is a tourist area. Head south and there aren't the huge tower blocks of Surfers. The Gold Coast is Australias Costa Del Sol. Once a year the area becomes the focus of schoolies week when a lot of the 18 year olds who have left school go there.

I have heard Coolangatta is a nice area for living. One thing is certain is there will be no shortage of temporary accomodation in the area for you to have a base to explore.

Broardbeach is 5kms south of Surfers and a world away, their are no strip joints, more family orientated, not so many high rises and so you don't get the same problem with shadows on the beach that you get at Surfers. There is a great shopping mall their, just off the beach with numerous resturants (try JO JO's roast beef meal for less than $5) parking is free (meters at surfers), this is where the casino is and the monorail.

One of my favourite spots on the Gold Coast.

Thanks BP and Kiwipaul. We have visited Broadbeach and we came to the same conclusion as you Paul. I was just a bit concerned when I read what he had written about the drugs and burglars. We need to settle in a tourism area as my husband works in hospitality.
